Dear Friends
I came across something recently that simply astonished me! It is part of a missionary prayer letter and refers to a man called Dr David Wang, who has recently written a book on China called - Still Red.
Dr Wang tells of a recent trip. His flight from China was delayed for 24 hours, so he grabbed any newspapers he could find and headed to his hotel for the night. An article caught Dr Wang's attention about the government's concern over the fact that China's youth are spending their summer days playing video games. The article then produced a list of ten books that the Chinese youth should read during their summer vacation. Believe it or believe it not, the one apparently heading the list was The Holy Bible!
It is noticeable that whilst there is some concern over certain aspects of youth culture in this country ( although it is usually the behaviour of the irresponsible minority that gets all the publicity!)nobody seems to be suggesting a course of Bible reading as a solution. This may be due to a deep-seated prejudice against the Word of God, a complete ignorance of what the scriptures have to say or simply the assumption that the Bible is old-fashioned nonsense, irrelevant to the needs of our young people today.
But the Bible does have something to say to all of us - many things in fact. Amongst them are the following:-
God is personal, holy and caring - he gives life and breath to all mankind.
Man is sinful, lost and far from God - we each need to be sought and found.
God became human - in the person of his Son - he tasted life and death.
Jesus became a sacrifice for sin - he died that we might be forgiven.
Jesus conquered death - he now lives in heaven and within believing hearts.
To be a Christian is to be given new life - true and everlasting life - from God.
Every year in this country, and many others, hundreds, possibly thousands of young people attend Christian camps and conferences. They listen attentively to lively messages from the Bible. Many of these young people come to personal faith in Christ and find their lives changed - for the better. If you know of anyone who would like to attend a Christian youth camp this summer, we would be happy to help in any way that we can.
Yours in the work of the Gospel of Christ
