November message 2007

I lift up my eyes to the hills,
from where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, he who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep
The Lord is your keeper;
the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
The Lord will preserve you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in
from this time forth and for evermore.

Psalm 121-ESV

Dear friends,

Life is like a journey. It may well be that our Psalmist is a pilgrim making his way up to Jerusalem to worship with the people of God. The days are hot, the nights are long and there are all sorts of difficulties to be faced - wild animals,robbers or dangerously unsafe paths. He provides a picture of a believer.

Believers have an Awareness.
There is in every Christian a sense of need. He or she is not self-sufficient. We lift up our eyes, we look beyond our own finite resources, we look beyond human ability in general, we look at the astonishing greatness of the creation around us and above us - but, the need in our souls is not met by anything we see.

Believers have an Answer.
The ultimate answer is not in ourselves, nor in humanity, nor even in the creation, but in the God who created all things. If the mountains and hills can give us a sense of strength,stability and safety - how much more the one who made them!

Believers have an Assurance.
The Lord of all creation is present to help all those who call upon him. He is able to protect those who follow him - constantly, day and night. He will preserve his people from every kind of moral and spiritual danger. It is good to trust in the Lord.
